MY JOURNEY
About the author
I have always loved reading children's stories. Picture books enhance the reader's imagination and help the stories come alive. As soon as my children were born, I vowed to read with them from their toddler age. Even now as my children are exiting their teens, we enjoy reading a good story together.
Only upon graduating from teacher's college in 2013, a career shift that changed my life, I dove into a new adventure of writing and created my first book. I was inspired to write the story of Crazy Cat by my kids, of course! My daughter fell in love with furry creatures at a very young age. My son was attending karate lessons at the time, and as I watched him develop his skill and strength over the years, I devised my fictional character as a karate champion. With a dash of my daughter's spunk, and a swirl of my son's karate rigour, the character of Crazy Cat was born. |

Book reviews
"Witty and pretty Crazy Cat completely charmed me. We read the book in a kindergarten classroom and children enjoyed the story. The illustrations in the book are beautiful and provoked children's interest. Following the reading, children were happy to draw and describe their favourite part of the story.
Crazy Cat is a strong character that draws children’s attention and pushes them to think that behind a pretty face and laid-back persona lies a smart, fun creature who is more than capable to stand against everyone who gets in her way." MK, Early Childhood Educator, Hamilton, Ontario |
“Really fun read aloud. Meet Crazy Cat and follow her as she rides her pink tricycle, hunts under the cover of darkness and faces the new dog in the neighbourhood.”
Children’s Bookshelf, www.cbookshelf.com “Nice little story about facing your fears. I can see librarians and teachers reading this to their young students. Young children, not just animal lovers will love it! Love Crazy Cat’s pilot goggles!” SV, Amazon.ca |
"Brilliant story for home and the classroom!
As a former early childhood and primary school teacher, I can see so many life lessons in this story for children; how to be proud of your individuality, how to be courageous and stand up for yourself and even the importance of a daily routine. The text flows beautifully and is perfectly paced for both young and older children. Vibrant fun illustrations and plenty of action grab and keep their attention. |
The discussion points at the end of the book are great for teaching cognitive thinking such as comparing, discerning and reasoning, just to name a few. Children also learn about animal behaviour and the value of martial arts in self-defence. I can see this book becoming a classic both as a bedtime story and at school. Absolutely loved it!"
AM, Reader Review, Goodreads.com |
"In this 24-page read, Pona focuses on a dashing feline’s not-so-cat-like characteristics. Bike riding? Crazy Cat does that. A master at karate? Crazy Cat is a master among cat masters. Dogs that are new to the neighbourhood quickly learn that Crazy Cat can’t be pounced on when she lazily relaxes in the sun. Crazy Cat is a fighter and stands up for herself. She’s not afraid to unleash those sharp claws and take a swipe.
The warm illustrations aptly depict Crazy Cat as she is – free spirited, adventurous, fearless ..., and confident. |
By focusing on what makes Crazy Cat different, Marta invites the reader to self-reflect and acknowledge their own unique differences. It’s a base for self-discovery and self-appreciation. At the back of the book there are prompts which position the reader to go beyond the page and think about animal behaviour. The normal and the not-so-normal (we all know a Crazy Cat), and how our differences are often our strengths."
